Co-Director OzFrank Theatre Film
has worked in the Australian theatre and dance fields for over 30 years
firstly as a modern dancer, choreographer, dance teacher and designer
and more recently as an actor, designer, acting trainer and developer,
with Jacqui Carroll, of Frank/Suzuki Actor Knowhow (FSAK).
first worked with internationally renowned Japanese theatre director,
Tadashi Suzuki in 1992, when he performed as Banquo’s Ghost in the
Suzuki/Playbox Theatre production of The Chronicle of Macbeth.
the only Australian actor ever invited to be a guest artist with the
Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT), John has performed with SCOT in Japan,
Europe and North America from 1994 to 1999.
was designated as an Official International Trainer of the Suzuki
Method of Actor in 1999 and was appointed by Suzuki in 2009 as the
Australian representative on Suzuki’s international Symposium for the
global dissemination of his training contributing an essay to the
official handbook The International Symposium on the Suzuki Method of Actor Training printed by SCOT, Toga, Japan.
For Ozfrank Theatre John has performed the roles of Roo in Doll Seventeen; Macbeth in The Tale of Macbeth: Crown of Blood; Oedipus in Oedipus Rex; Stijef in The Royal Fair; Gertrude in Hamlet Stooged! Hamlet in Heavy Metal Hamlet; Herod in Salome; Orpheus; Romeo; Tajomaru in Rashomon, Demi-god in Midsummer Night’s Romeos and Macbeth in Voodoo Macbeth, MC Black Angel in Up Jumped the Devil, Motel Owner and Agent of Memory in Motel of Memory, B in Beatniks Tailgate Daddy-oh’s God-oh! and Chorus in The Training of the Shrew.
Most recently John has featured as Macbeth in Ozfrank’s latest venture, the full length feature film The Castle of Macbeth’s Head. He is currently performing the role of Don Perlimplin in a ‘Point-of-View’ filming of Lorca’s play The Love of Don Perlimplin.
with a degree in Interior Design, has designed and built the sets and
props for all of Ozfrank’s 12 major works, and over the last few years,
has written articles and essays on the development of Frank’s aesthetic
as a fusion of East/West theory and practice. As author, in 2006, John
wrote Frankly Acting: an autobiography of Frank Suzuki Performance Aesthetics and in 2010 A Devil Pokes the Actor both published by Frank Theatre Press as well as writing the text for the plays Hamlet Stooged!, Up Jumped the Devil, Motel of Memory and Beatniks Tailgate Daddy-o’s God-oh! And The Training of the Shrew.
has been the principal creator behind the Frank/Suzuki Actor Knowhow, a
regional variation of the Suzuki Method of Actor training.
has also expanded his skills to include film editing which has allowed
Ozfrank theatre to develop an extensive range of films and video
John is currently performing Oedipus in the upcoming film of Oedipus Rex and Lear in King Lear: mad as hell in the hovel on the hill.
